St Albans Symphony Orchestra presents Beethoven, Schumann, Kodály and Torke in a programme spanning nearly 200 years.

Beethoven's Seventh Symphony was written during his so called middle period, when he suffered personal crisis brought on by his recognition of encroaching deafness. This wonderfully rhythmic work expresses heroism and artistic struggle.

Schumann’s career as a virtuoso pianist was halted by a hand injury, following which he focussed his musical energies on composition. His piano concerto is one of the most popular in the repertoire.

Kodály wrote his comic opera Háry János in 1925. The suite contains some famous extracts, drawing on lively Hungarian folk music and dance.

Michael Torke lives and works in America. Composed in 1998, Adjustable Wrench has been described as "the modern equivalent of a Mozart Divertimento, with all the skill and craftsmanship which that implies".
