  St Albans Cathedral

St Albans  AL1 1BY
A German Requiem performed by St Cecilia Festival Society in the magnificent surroundings of St Albans Abbey.

St Albans Symphony Orchestra is joined by Hardynge Choir, Radlett Choral Society and St Albans Chamber Choir in this biennial Festival concert with works by Brahms and Messiaen.

A German Requiem is the most personal music Brahms ever wrote. After grappling for months with ideas for a memorial to his mother, and to his friend Robert Schumann - who had died nine years earlier - the Requiem was completed in 1868.

The Ascension was composed by Olivier Messiaen early in his career in 1933 and was inspired by texts from the liturgy for the Feast of the Ascension, marking Christ's ascent from earth to heaven.

Bernadette McGreevy soprano

David Stout  baritone

Bjorn Bantock  conductor
